STRATEGIES FOR CHOOSING PT SCHOOLS
The Choosing Schools Service is a set of three one hour online video conferences and/or phone discussions in which we will collaborate to create a list of schools to which you will apply.
We will consider admissions factors including your academic history; work, volunteer, and shadowing experiences; and GRE score, among others, to determine which schools are strategically best for your application process. We will also consider factors about each school including their target applicants, their location (including residency preference), their admissions rate, their curriculum, their clinical opportunities, and their size.
How do Physical Therapy Programs Differ?
Physical therapy programs may be located in large, urban cities or smaller, more rural areas. The programs may be attached to a university (teaching) hospital or they can be located in a separate geographic area.
Physical therapy programs may vary in class size, with classes sizes ranging from 3 to 99 students. Programs may involve working in teams for the duration of the program.
Physical therapy programs may be part of public or private institutions. Private programs account for 54% of all programs nationally.
Physical therapy programs all include certain core elements in their curricula as defined by the Commission on the Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. However, programs may offer unique classes such as electives, specialty tracks (i.e. orthopedics, neurology, pediatrics), and clinical experiences.
All physical therapy students are required to complete a certain number of hours in clinical settings while enrolled in school. Physical therapy programs offer these clinical internships at varying sites (i.e. physical therapy settings and geographic locations), and the structure of how students complete these internships may differ in length and required settings.
Tuition varies widely by program, with factors such as public versus private institutions and state of residence affecting the total tuition. Annual tuition may vary between $4,028 and $71,220, according to the Commission on the Accreditation of Physical Therapy Education.
